How are CBD Gummies Made?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid derived from the hemp plant. Unlike cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it does not produce the “high” commonly associated with cannabis consumption.

Since hemp-derived compounds like CBD were legalized with the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, manufacturers began experimenting with a wide range of CBD-enhanced products. From daily essentials like lip balms and face masks to edibles like gummies, CBD has become a mainstream household staple.

Assorted CBD edibles have been gaining popularity in recent years, with gummies a favorite due to their tasty flavors and easy dosing. Continue reading to learn more about this fun way to consume your daily dose of CBD!

How is CBD extracted?

Hemp-derived CBD gummies are exactly what they sound like: gummies infused with CBD extracts. To fully comprehend how CBD gummies are made, it’s important to first understand the CBD extraction process.

CBD is extracted from the resinous flowers of the hemp plant. However, before the CBD extraction process begins, these cannabinoid-rich flowers must be heated in a process called decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation is a crucial step because it activates certain cannabinoids like CBD and THC. Pre-decarboxylation, these cannabinoids remain in their inactive states: CBDA and THCA, respectively. Heat removes the extra carboxyl ring from their chemical structure, converting CBDA to CBD and THCA to THC.

To derive isolated CBD and other cannabinoids from the hemp plant, technicians must separate the resinous oil from the plant via extraction. CBD is extracted using one of two general methods: solvent extraction and carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction.

Solvent extraction involves the use of solvents such as alcohols like ethanol or isopropyl, or gases like butane or propane. While this method is effective in extracting CBD from hemp, the process can be dangerous due to the use of highly flammable substances. These materials can also taint the final product, so it’s essential that you only purchase CBD products from reputable companies that readily provide a certificate of authenticity (COA).

CO2 extraction is a lengthier process that ultimately creates a purer product. Here, CO2 is used under very low temperatures and high pressure to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp flowers. Although CO2 extraction is the purest method for extracting cannabinoids, it requires the use of expensive equipment and can be a difficult process to perfect.

Depending on the method used, CBD extracts are either used as tinctures or combined with carrier oils to create CBD oil.

How are hemp-derived CBD gummies made?

Once CBD is fully extracted from the hemp plant, it can be used to create infused products like gummies. They are shelf-stable and often last a long time when properly stored in their original packaging.

CBD gummies consist of four primary ingredients:

  • CBD and/or other cannabinoids
  • Sweeteners such as sugar or corn syrup
  • Thickeners like gelatin, tapioca, or vegan fruit pectin
  • Natural or artificial flavors

In addition, many gummies also use starches, natural coloring, and other ingredients to act as preservatives or ensure proper consistency.

To make CBD gummies, all ingredients except the CBD itself are combined, heated, and then poured into molds. CBD is added after the initial cooking process because it deteriorates at around 392˚F (200˚C). Once the final mixture cools, the gummies are removed from the molds, tested for purity, and packaged for sale.

Are CBD gummies right for you?

Gummies are amongst the easiest and most enjoyable ways of consuming CBD. Not only are they delicious: but they’re also a discreet on-the-go option that’s very easy to dose.

Because CBD gummies take on the appearance of any other run-of-the-mill gummy, you can consume them discreetly while out and about!

Additionally, CBD gummies are pre-dosed so you receive your ideal dosage each time you consume them. Manufacturers test their formulas to ensure that each gummy carries a specific amount of CBD that adequately meets general therapeutic needs while mitigating any potential for unwanted side effects.

As with any edible CBD product, the full effects of CBD take some time to kick in. This is because edible products must be digested in your stomach and then metabolized by your liver before the cannabinoids finally reach your bloodstream. This process takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, largely depending on the contents of your stomach and your own unique rate of metabolism.

Once CBD and other cannabinoids reach your bloodstream, the effects set in, whether subtle or pronounced. It’s important to err on the side of caution and wait a full hour or so before consuming additional edibles to avoid overdoing it and potentially inducing unwanted side effects.

Because there are so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to choose a CBD gummy that’s right for you. Before purchasing any products, be sure to read the label carefully, checking for clean, natural, organic ingredients and avoiding artificial dyes and preservatives, amongst other additives. In addition, always confirm that the COA is presented clearly on the manufacturer’s website to help determine the legitimacy of the product.
