Is Hemp-Derived CBD Good for Sleep?

Unlike over-the-counter or prescription sleep drugs, CBD is natural and has many benefits besides just sedation. In fact, many studies suggest that it has a positive impact on people with sleep disorders, like insomnia, by providing relaxation, calming anxiety and stress, and managing pain and inflammation–all factors that make it difficult for us to fall and stay asleep. 

If you’re tossing and turning, trying to count sheep, or desperately trying anything to get enough sleep at night, you’re not alone. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control stated that a third of US adults are not getting enough sleep at night. Additionally, the American Sleep Association reports that up to 70 million Americans are affected by different types of sleep disorders, like insomnia or sleep apnea. Sleep disorders can lead to some serious health risks, like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Not getting enough sleep can also cause car accidents, not performing well at work, and other unfortunate occurrences. 

Getting enough sleep is vital to both your mental and physical health, which is why it is key to find sleep solutions that work well for you. While many people seek unhealthy, over-the-counter sleep aids or prescriptions, others are turning to alternative options, like CBD. 

In order to understand how CBD can help with sleep, it’s best to have a comprehensive grasp of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). In a recent article from Forbes titled How CBD Can Benefit Sleep, Dr. Chantel Stachan states, “The endocannabinoid system is a complex neurochemical network in the body that regulates various bodily functions, including emotions, pain, and sleep. While the body naturally releases endocannabinoid molecules, external sources of cannabinoids, such as CBD, can affect the body via the ECS.”

  • CBD comes in many forms, but we like tinctures and/or gummies for sleep. Tinctures are super versatile. You can either take a dropper-full under your tongue and then ingest it or you can mix it in a nice, warm cup of tea before bed. Gummies are easy and convenient, just take one or two about 30 minutes before saying goodnight
  • Before buying any CBD, make sure the product comes with a COA (Certificate of Analysis) and that it is third-party tested so you know you’re getting something helpful and effective. You can typically find this information on a company’s website
  • Start with a smaller dose and then gradually increase it. Remember, any natural health routine takes a while to work well. Don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t work right away, just keep increasing the amount until you find the perfect dose for yourself
  • Talk with your doctor or healthcare provider about CBD for sleep. It’s a great alternative to sleeping pills because it’s natural and has relatively low toxicity
