What is the Endocannibinoid System

When it comes to the discovery of transmitter systems within our bodies, the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is relatively new. The purpose of your Endocannabinoid System is to help your body reach homeostasis, a state in which all of your bodily functions are operating optimally. The word endo simply means “within the body.” The ECS was discovered by scientists in the 1990s; it’s made up of a large network of chemical signals and cellular receptors located in our brains and bodies and is heavily involved in a wide variety of processes, like our response to pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune function, and reproductive function.

Both your brain and body have cannabinoid receptors; they’re known as CB1 and CB2 receptors. To activate cannabinoid receptors, our brains and bodies produce endocannabinoid molecules. Lipid-based endocannabinoid molecules act as neurotransmitters that bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors, mainly found throughout our central nervous systems, control activity levels for most other neurotransmitters and regulate systems by adjusting the activity levels of whichever systems need to be modified, like body temperature, hunger, or whether we feel alert or not. CB2 receptors, mainly found throughout the peripheral nervous system, help regulate our immune response, inflammation, pain, and metabolic processes.

As stated above, the purpose of the ECS is to help your body reach a state in which it is functioning optimally, also known as homeostasis. Outside sources, like pain, can throw your body’s homeostasis out of whack. When this happens, your ECS kicks in to help your body return to running more optimally. This is where phytocannabinoids come into play.

Phytocannabinoids are simply cannabinoids produced by a plant, like cannabis or hemp plants. Endocannabinoid molecules have a similar structure to phytocannabinoids. More research into the ECS has revealed that our brains and bodies respond to cannabinoids from outside sources, like phytocannabinoids. Some of the most well-known phytocannabinoids are CBD and THC. Both THC and CBD impact the ECS and have many therapeutic benefits.

All of our bodies get out of balance from time to time. To reach homeostasis for better health, you should consider going through your Endocannabinoid System. One of the ways to do so is to try a CBD routine. CBD is a great option because it is non-psychoactive and is generally legal throughout the US. Having said that, it is always wise to check with your local jurisdiction to see if it is legal in your specific area if you’re going to start a CBD routine.
